Yampa and Green Rivers
Dory "River Odyssey"

We invite you to join the 4th annual dory trip on the Colorado River’s tributary system. This season, our friends have devised a most exceptional journey, floating the Wild and Scenic Yampa River to its confluence with the Green River, then continuing down through Whirlpool and Split Mountain Canyons, and finishing through Desolation and Gray Canyons. Participants have a choice to join either the full journey or a partial journey.
The full journey consists of 15 days on the river with an added full day (day 6) of off-river touring in Dinosaur National Monument and 2 nights at a hotel. The full journey is for the seasoned river lover who wishes to fully explore this exceptional region of the Colorado Plateau. This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip in the “Cadillac” of river boats, wooden dories, with a cast of river legends. We’ve chosen the month of May as key timing to anticipate optimal water flows for the dories, for cooler spring temperatures, and to have less crowds.
A partial journey would include one of the following options: 1) Upper River Portion - 5 days on the Yampa River and Green River; or 2) Lower River Portion - 10 days on the Green River through Desolation and Gray Canyons. Each river segment is unique in scenery and hiking. The Yampa River cuts through narrow sandstone canyons with sheer tiger-striped walls. This section is truly a gem for intimate beauty, slickrock hiking, and high desert camping. It is a swift water canyon with many Class 111 rapids and one famous Class IV rapid. The Green River through Whirlpool Canyon and Split Mountain Gorge offers easy Class III rapids and dramatic geology as we enter Dinosaur National Park. Desolation and Gray Canyons are each unique, layered sandstone and shale gorges lined with Cottonwood glades amidst sandy beaches as the river cuts in and out of deep canyons. This section is known for the 1000-year-old Fremont Anasazi ruins and rock art panels that we will hike up side canyons to view, as well as remote historic features of the old cowboy west.
