What Should I Bring?
Each of our trip descriptions contain additional information packages that we call "Float Notes", which include comprehensive lists of items we suggest you bring. You may find the Float Notes available for all of our trips here.
What Shouldn't I Bring?
Please do not bring firearms, pets, or valuable jewelry, electrical items like blow dryers, curling irons, camera battery chargers or large amounts of cash. We do not carry a generator on our trips.
The only cash you will need will be for canned drinks, small "last minute" items, and boatman gratuities.
What is and is not included?
We furnish all food, eating utensils, two waterproof bags for clothes and sleeping gear, a small waterproof day bag for your camera and day use items, and a Coast Guard approved life jacket. You bring your personal clothing. Some pre- and post-trip transportation is included. Camping gear (sleep kits & tents) are included on Utah trips but not included for Grand Canyon trips. Trip prices do not include boatman gratuities.
What rental equipment is available?
We have a limited supply of rental sleeping kits for Grand Canyon trips which include a sleeping bag (freshly laundered), pad, and ground cloth -- all packed into a waterproof bag. There is a nominal charge. Rental tents are also available.
How do I choose the best trip?
See our section on choosing a trip, link here, for good basic information about all of our trips.
The answer to “which trip is the best” is highly subjective and difficult to respond with precision. How much time do you have? Do you enjoy camping? Do you enjoy hiking?
Do you love nature? Do you crave peace and quiet? Does your soul need rejuvenation?
What risks are involved?
As owners of Moki Mac, we strive to operate the safest trips possible. We personally screen and train our employees. Each boatman receives extensive instructions on safety precautions and first aid training. Our river rafting adventures take place in rugged, remote wilderness settings, and we carry emergency communications devices. You should be in good general health to participate. Non-swimmers can go. We provide Coast Guard approved life jackets for your safety.
Where will I sleep and what will I eat and drink?
A river trip is an outdoor experience. All of our trips require camping out. There are no improved campgrounds along the river. You will be sleeping mostly on sandy river beaches, perhaps “under the stars” (weather permitting) or in a cozy tent. You should be prepared and comfortable with eating, sleeping, and living in the out of doors for as short as two nights up to 13 nights! Bathing in the river can be exhilarating! Some guests prefer to bring their own "SunShower” bags.
Most trips include all meals beginning with lunch on the first day and ending with lunch on the last day. (Grand Canyon trips may not include lunch on last day on trips that go to Diamond Creek or Lake Mead.) Menus include ample portions of a nutritious mix of fruit, meats, and vegetables. We supply plenty of drinking water, lemonade, breakfast drinks, etc., on each trip. We are able to accommodate vegetarian diets.
How may I enjoy a “toddy” in the evening?
You provide your own canned beer or soft drinks (maximum two cans per person, per day on the oar-powered trips). If you bring liquor, please transfer it into plastic bottles. Wine is best in a box! Beer and soft drinks may be purchased before your trip in Green River, Utah, or Marble Canyon, Arizona. Boxed wine is also available at Marble Canyon. If you choose a Grand Canyon trip that begins at Phantom Ranch, you may order beverages ahead and we will bring them down to meet you. (Keep your load light on the trail!)
How will I “go potty”?
A portable sanitation facility (aka the "groover", "biffy", "loo", etc...) is set up immediately upon arriving in each evening and is available until just before the rafts leave in the morning. It's almost the same as you have at home except the view is intensely inspiring! Your privacy is assured. Hand washing facilities are provided.
What are the age limitations?
For Westwater Canyon, Grand Canyon and high water Cataract Canyon trips, we suggest a minimum age of 12 years. On other runs, the limit is 8 years of age. However, children as young as six have done well on the Desolation Canyon trip. Children as young as 4 years can do the Green River/Gray Canyon daily trip. For all trips, ask yourself what kind of previous outdoor/camping experience has the child had? Use your considered judgment on the child's preparedness. On the other end, folks well into (and in some cases past) their 70's have floated with us.
What will the weather be like?
Be prepared for hot (75-115 F degrees) weather during June, July, and August. You can expect cooler temperatures (55-90 F degrees) during April, May, September, and October. August is usually the wettest month (short-lived but intense thunder showers). A good quality rain suit (pants and jacket with hood) will keep you comfortable during stormy weather.
What are the fishing opportunities?
Catfish are plentiful in the Green and Upper Colorado Rivers. There are some trout in the Colorado below Glen Canyon Dam. If you bring a rod, please choose a compact backpacker model. A license is required. Fee schedules and purchase locations will be forwarded upon request.
What are the Charter Group Requirements & what Group Rates are available?
Reduced rates are available for school, club, church, or special-interest groups on some trips. Charter groups (your exclusive trip) usually require a minimum of 10 with a maximum of 24 depending on the trip you want. Charter group discounts from 10% to 20% are available. Customized trip lengths and itineraries for some trips can be arranged. Contact us for help in arranging your charter trip.
When should I book space?
Popular trips like the Grand Canyon runs begin booking up to a year in advance. Some Grand trip and many Utah trips might have openings available much closer to your desired launch date. As a general rule, the earlier you book, the better.
